Thank you so much to all the family members that were able to attend our first writing celebration of 2nd grade! Your student worked so hard on their personal narratives! We focused on picking a "Seed Idea," having a "hook," include dialogue, and end with a good conclusion ("wrap it up!")
The students in room 103 would like to invite you to our first
Writer's Celebration of the 2014-2015 school year! Who: Mrs. Damhof's 2nd graders and their families What: Celebrate our 1st published piece: "Personal Narratives" Where: Room 103 When: Friday, October 17th @ 10:30am Why: To celebrate our hard work and hear some great stories! We hope you can join us! If you have any questions, please let me know! Thanks, The 2nd graders and Mrs. Damhof Each month, the students at Bromwell will be focusing on one or two Core Virtues (character building). This first month we have been working on Respect and Responsibility. During morning meetings, I have had discussions with the students about our monthly virtues and we have created a definition for each virtue. We will continue to have conversations about our virtues throughout the remainder of the month. At the end of the month, the students will choose one student who they feel has shown the virtue numerous times and that student will get an "Eagle Award!" We will do one Core Virtue every month for the remainder of the school year. Our class created a RESPECT wall in our hallway! Come check it out! A special thanks to Sarah Hall and Jen Eichberg for helping with this project!
Please use the following link to sign up for parent/teacher conferences! Conferences will be held on October 23rd and November 6th!

We will be able to wear them to school events (field day) as well as our Field Trips. The shirts are $10 each. The order needs to be placed asap, so please return the form and money NO LATER THAN Friday, October 3rd. Please attach $10.00 to the form that will be sent home with your child today. Cash is preferred, but IF YOU WRITE A CHECK MAKE IT PAYABLE TO AMY DECAMILLIS. If you would like to donate more than $10, great, we will make sure that everyone gets a t-shirt. Your child is currently participating in the Accelerated Reader program. This program has your child reading at his or her independent reading level. It is important that children read at their reading levels to build fluency and comprehension. Your child will begin this coming week taking quizzes on the books that they have read in the classroom or checked out from the library at their AR level. These quizzes check how well they understand what they read, earning them points as they pass each comprehension quiz. I encourage you to check out books from the public library which can also be tested on in the classroom. If your child would like to take a quiz on a book that has been checked out from a public library, please have them bring the book to school. It will be returned once the quiz has been taken. As a reminder, students are only allowed to test on books in their current point range. I will send home your child's reading range in their Friday folder today! If you have any questions about the AR reading program please do not hesitate to contact me at school. You can also visit arbookfind.com to see what level books are that you already own. Happy Reading, Mrs. Damhof Dear Parents,
The time has come for the second grade science experiment presentations. These presentations will be done on Mondays (some Tuesdays due to holidays). Each student will present an individual science experiment for the class. This is not a science fair but just simple science experiments. Students have some choices to consider for their experiments. 1. An experiment that they find in a book or online. They can always add their own ideas or steps to make it their own or an inquiry-based experiment. 2. An inquiry-based experiment in which they make up and design themselves. They may be wondering or thinking about something in science. They could come up with an experiment based on their wonderings. Each student must have these parts/steps in his/her experiment 1. Topic 2. Question- After you have chosen your topic, what are your questions about the topic? 3. Hypothesis 4. Materials 5. Procedures 6. Results 7. Conclusion Please put these seven components on index cards with a short explanation. Each index card is to organize their experiment, their thinking, and what they plan to say when presenting to the group. A simple explanation or just a few sentences should be written on each card. Parents, these should be very simple and age appropriate. Some of the best experiments use simple things that you have in your cupboards at home. There can be NO fire or animals (district policy). Each student should practice/rehearse at home. They are to bring everything to school on their assigned day. If they need assistance during the experiment, I can help or better yet, another student can help.
