September STEM Materials:
This month the 2nd grade students will be creating 3 different STEM projects, Rockin' School Bus, Pop Pom Slingshot, and Apple Rafts. We need the following materials to make this successful! Thank you for helping! (Need by September 23rd) http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c49a8af2fa7f85-september 2nd grade meeting place:
The 2nd grade classes will line up according to homeroom at the 2nd grade door. Mrs. Witt and I will pick them up when the bell rings at 8:25. Students will come into the building and unpack themselves and enter the classroom. Once cold weather arrives, students may wait in the front lobby until the first bell. Please honor the teacher’s time before school and do not enter the classroom until the first bell at 8:25. If you have any questions about this, please let me know. Bell Schedule: School begins at 8:25am. The 1st bell will ring at 8:25am, followed by a tardy bell at 8:30am. If you arrive after 8:25am, please stop in the office to receive a tardy pass. School is dismissed at 3:15pm. Attendance: Daily attendance is a vital part of the student’s learning process and academic success. If your child is going to be absent, please contact the front office or me to let us know that your child will not be at school. If you know that your child will be missing school, please let me know as soon as possible to gather the materials they will be missing while they are absent. Birthdays: Birthdays are very important and a special day for youngers. As exciting as a birthday can be the amount of treats has become overwhelming. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday you may provide one treat for the class to share with your child. This may be one type of cupcake, munchkins, pretzels, cheese and crackers, fruit, veggies, etc. If food is not your preface you may donate a class book for our classroom library, in which we will read on that special day. *Please no candy, goodie bags, balloons, or candles. When providing a treat please send me a note a few days prior to his/her birthday stating what will be given. Birthday celebrations will be held at the end of the day. Snack: Students are allowed to bring two healthy snacks a day to school. Label your child’s snack with their name on it. Water bottles are also recommended. *Please be mindful of students with allergies, try to avoid bringing snacks with peanuts. Classroom Website: Please visit our classroom website regularly for updates. Mrs. Damhof’s second grade website is: mrsdamhof.weebly.com The website will have updated monthly newsletters, weekly homework assignments, important dates, contact information, educational resources, and “what we are up to in 2nd grade!” Volunteers: If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom, I will be sending out a volunteer form for you to complete. I will contact you once I know what you are interested in. Field Trips: Second grade will attend two field trips this school year. More information to come. J Homework: Homework will be sent home the 2nd week of school. Ms. Witt and I will give you more information next week with the procedures for homework. Friday Folders: Fridays are school/home communication day. You can expect your child to bring home a folder containing schoolwork, classroom news, and news of school meetings and events. Parents are encouraged to use this folder to communicate their comments or concerns to the teacher. The folder should be returned to school each Monday. Management: At the beginning of the year, the students and I will create a classroom promise of rules that we believe we should follow. We will brainstorm our ideas, and then come to a consensus of the rules we want. Once we have decided on our classroom promise, each student will sign the poster. If students are not following our classroom promise, I will give the student a warning first. If the behavior continues, I will contact home either by email or phone. If you have any questions about management, please let me know. I am also a strong believer in “Positive Reinforcement.” Our class will work together to build a Mr. Potato Head for a reward. When I notice or another adult notices our entire class doing something well, I will give them a potato head part. When Mr. Potato head is complete, we will vote as a class on a reward. Communication: The best way to reach me is by email: [email protected] I will check my email periodically throughout the school day. I will make it a priority to respond to your emails within 24 hrs. Communication is very important and if you ever need anything please let me know. How To Presentations
Dear 2nd grade families, Our class is currently studying how-to’s in Writer’s Workshop. We will be reading and writing many different types of how-to’s in the next few weeks. At the end of the unit, students will be asked to present a how-to to the class. Students should pick a topic that they are interested in and know a lot about! They are the experts teaching us! Some examples are: how to make a paper airplane, tie a shoe, make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. (Be creative!) Students need to present the following: Tell what their topic is, materials needed, step by step instructions/directions, and a closing! Your child will present on the following date and time December 15th December 16th December 17th 9:30am 10:30am 9:30am Kady Lila Zeca Ryan Abigale Andrew Cash Mason Emilia Finnur Sam Emma Violet Kyle Kian Abby Sebastian Sophie Rory Kenzie Ewan Siena Ali Hope Lena Wesley Paul If you have any questions, please let me know!
